Check yourself before you wreck yourself

I’m sure a lot of us (unfortunately) have dealt with overwhelm, exhaustion and burnout in our time. Even more so, if you run your own business, the pressure to keep on building can be challenging.
‘My business will only be successful if I make it successful’ this is true. You do have to work, but you don’t have to work yourself into the ground for ‘success’ to happen. When you reach the summit of success, you want to enjoy the view, not pass out because of exhaustion.
It’s essential to check in on yourself now and then. Why wouldn’t you put yourself in the best position possible to keep going and get to where you want to be?
I’ve started checking in on myself every few weeks; here are the nine questions I ask:
  • How am I feeling?
  • Why am I feeling this way?
  • What isn’t working for me?
  • What is working for me?
  • What do I want to achieve this week?
  • What do I need to do to be able to accomplish this?
  • How can I improve?
  • What can I let go of?
  • What am I proud of?
Checking in has helped me see the bigger picture, reminds me why I’m doing what I’m doing and nudges me to pat myself on the back every now and then. By dedicating time to review your current position, you will start to see things more clearly. Are you working on the right thing? Are you enjoying what you’re doing? Do you need to mentally check out for a bit? As well as this, you’ll also understand what is coming your way and be more prepared for the bumps in the road.
Checking in on yourself isn’t going to solve everything. Make time for self-care. It’s an essential piece of the ‘success’ puzzle. Self-care is any activity you do voluntarily which helps you maintain your physical, mental or emotional health. All of which tie into your approach to your business.
Self-care is a personal thing; it can mean different things to different people. To me, self-care is eating well, going on walks, having a bath and singing (badly) to anything from the Noughties. It helps reduce my stress, improve my creativity and improve my mental health. Something that we all need.
Find out what self-care means to you and block that time out. BLOCK IT OUT. It’s crucial. Add self-care as an event into your calendar and make sure you invest time into yourself - it’s only going to help!
