Mistakes are inevitable. They DO happen. Every now and then you're going to make one. If you don't make a mistake directly, there will be something out of your hands that doesn't go to plan.
Normally if I make a mistake, that's me done. I get extremely annoyed and upset with myself. I feel like I've let everyone down and it takes me a good few days to move on from it (dramatic? Yes, but true). This makes being a 'people pleaser' even harder.
But it's not all doom and gloom. Making mistakes is important. You can learn a lot from them. Here are a few things to keep in mind when you are faced with a mistake.
Acknowledgment & understanding
So you've made a mistake. It's happened. You're annoyed at yourself but take a step back and look at the bigger picture. Why has this mistake happened? How has this mistake happened? Does it affect anything immediately?
It's important to take a breather and understand with a clear head what this mistake means. You're not going to achieve anything if you're stressed out and wound up. Have a think, were you rushing at the time of the mistake, or were you overtired? Were you not given enough information? It could be anything, but it's important to take note. Take note of the situation and understand why it happened. I have a page in Notion called 'Learnings(mistakes)' for exactly this. Once you've learned why it's happened, you can then put processes in place to steer you away from making the same mistake again.
Change your mind
Change your tunnel vision mindset to a more open mindset. When you're focusing on the mistake in that situation, it can feel like the end of the world. You're engulfed in whatever has just happened and it can be overwhelming. Open your eyes to everything else that's happening, you start to realise that this is only a small piece of the puzzle and you start to see it for what it is. This will help you push through.
You've got this
Sometimes you need to be kicked down to rediscover motivation. You might have become too comfortable with a task and therefore tripped up on something. Find the drive and motivation to right the wrong, and make a pact with yourself that this won't happen again. Motivation is key to dusting yourself off and keeping on going…
Mistakes are going to happen. If you were always getting things right, life would be boring. So embrace the mistake, you'll be better for it!✨
